The most easterly region of Ghana, bordering on Togo, the Volta Region is an area of extraordinary scenic beauty. The rolling hills and valleys, rocky outcrops overlooking Lake Volta, and lagoons, rivers and waterfalls make for one of nature's most attractive gifts to Ghana. The region stretches from the coastal plains on the Atlantic coast right up to the arid lands of the north, and climatic conditions can vary tremendously. From the coastal plain, fringed by sun-dappled beaches and mangrove swamps, through moist deciduous rain forests in the central belt, where Mt. Afadja at 885m is the highest point in Ghana, to the arid Savannah of northern Ghana.
Wli Waterfalls
The water flows from part of the Akwapim-Togo hills rage 20km from Hohoe, in the Wli Natural Reserve. This waterfall is becoming very popular in the West African sub-region. It is perennial as water cascades throughout the year. It is located at the edge of the ; matsa Wildlife Sanctuary, which has hundreds of trait bats and a few monkeys and antelopes. The water falls from a height of about 1,600 feet, into a plunge pool-ere swimming is permitted. The Wli area has a colony of wild bats, butterflies and flowers.
Lake Volta Estuary
The estuary is an area of great scenic beauty with river and ocean beaches, and picnic spots shaded by palm tree. The sand bars are the nesting grounds for sea birds, and endangered species of twitter are still found here. Of all the ways proposed to monitor, slow or stop deforestation around the world this may be a first: Reuters is reporting that Ghana is looking to harvest 14 million cubic meters (494.4 million cubic feet) of timber that was submerged 40 years ago when Lake Volta was formed behind the Akosombo hydroelectric dam. On this same lake fishing is allowed for fishermen and tourists who enjoy fishing or diving, but one would need very good experience to go diving in this lake though its worth seeing what lies beneath.
